Lighthouse Trust have supported schools in the Northampton area since 1997 and the Interventions programme began in 2000 when it was known as Pastoral Care Support. In 2008 we expanded our interventions operation to include working in 'Out of School' projects in the community.
The Interventions team provides one to one and group sessions to support the social and emotional development of children and young people. These sessions seek to strengthen practical life skills, develop emotional literacy, address specific challenges or crisis situations and have opportunity to have someone listen to their worries or concerns.
Sessions in groups add a dynamic which enables the participants to learn together, share their own thoughts and experiences with peer's and practise practical life skills in a safe and positive environment facilitated by an experienced adult.
Life ‘N’ Learning - this programme seeks to enable young teenagers to recognise the effects of their own thought processes and behaviour responses to achieve personal goals. During the sessions, young people will participate in discussion, role play, games, real life and DVD based observations, exploring issues relevant to their own development and education.
S@fe - this programme is aimed at promoting practical life skills and developing a child’s capacity to manage their emotions through the tools of discussion, creative art and play. Children will also benefit from meeting with others experiencing similar challenges.
Managing Emotions - this programme seeks to enable participants to develop a range of ‘tools’ to deal with negative feelings that can sometimes overwhelm and result in unhelpful behaviour by using activities and games, discussion, role-play and D.V.D based observations to engage participants and develop skills.
Self-esteem - this programme seeks to develop a young person’s ability to recognise personal strengths and weaknesses, and promoting a healthy self-image in a positive way. How a young person sees themselves has an immeasurable impact on the way they think and behave and these sessions use discussion, worksheets, games and practical activities..
Engage - this is a programme for younger children and is aimed at addressing school life issues such as motivation to learn and to attend school. Managing problems, conflict and attitudes to self and others, pupils will explore these issues through role-play, D.V.D observations and discussion, games and other positive activities.
FriendZ - this programme is aimed at strengthening a young person’s ability to make and keep friends. The programme explores issues through, discussions, activities and games in a group setting and includes promoting friendships within the group. Topics covered include, choosing friends, keeping friends, building trust, honesty and problem solving.
LifeSkills - this programme seeks to develop a young persons understanding about the unwritten social rules that influence how we are seen and understood by others. Topics covered include body language, personal space and, listening and speaking skills. Practical activities, games, role play and discussion are used to achieve this aim.
This work helps to:
- address issues that will help safeguard young people from getting involved with crime and substance misuse
- reassure the public and communities by engaging with them
- promote and encourage young people to develop their skills and talents, to encourage attainment, ambitions and aspirations as being realistic in order for them to thrive and achieve
- address emotional disorder which prevents intellectual development in young people and support those who are at risk of social exclusion
- address family conflict and poor relationships with parents/carers, low self esteem, low aspirations and low education attainment
The Intervention programme helps children and young people to overcome social and economic disadvantages through collaborative service approaches, by helping to reduce the number affected by offending and victimization.
